No-Go(als) and Life Vision

Issue number #037
28 September 2023
Reading time 4 minutes

Last week, I shared my 1-to-5 system for creating lasting life satisfaction.

However, I realised that I forgot to mention one crucial type of goals: the "No-Go(als)". Let me explain why they are so important in our lives.

Imagine you have a vision or goal to become a singer, writer, or a top manager in a company. You work tirelessly towards that goal for 5-10 years and finally achieve it. You become famous or the right-hand person of the company director.

But then, you turn around and realise you are alone. Your friends and family have drifted away, your children don't know who you are, and your partner has left you. All because you focused solely on that one goal.

This is why "No-Go(als)" are essential. They remind you to consider your overall vision for your life, not just specific achievements in one area of your life.

That's why when helping someone unleash their potential and live an authentic life, my first focus is to discover their inner values. They are essential to create a Life Vision worth living.

The key to a fulfilling life is understanding who you are, why you are here, and what you truly value. From this foundation, you can identify what you want and don't want in your life.

Understanding what you want and don't want in your life helps you to create your Life Vision, the overall image of how you want your life to look like.*

Life Vision is an overall picture of your life based on who you are; your inner purpose, needs and values. It can be extended into the Life Plan, a Roadmap, outlining your life journey, with specific Milestones along the path. The Milestones are the moonshot goals you aim to achieve in all areas of your life.

So how can you create a Life Vision and extend it to a Life Plan?

Here are three steps:

1. Who
- Start with introspection: Dive deep into your soul and think about who you are and what matters most to you. Who you are? What are your needs, strengths, and opportunities for growth? What are your values? If you would like guidance on how to do it, I can help, but remember: I can tell you how to look, but only you can find the answers, because they are hidden inside you, in your heart.

2. Why
- Identify your purpose*: Once you understand who you are, it's easy to determine why you're here and what your purpose is. This will help guide your vision of how you want your life to look.

* Your Purpose is different from Your Mission.
Your Purpose is who you are and why you are here.
Your Mission is how you bring who you are and your purpose to the world.

3. What
- Consider what you want in life and what you don't want: Based on your self-understanding and purpose, decide on the things that will bring meaning and happiness to your life.

By creating a vision based on your true self and values, you can avoid the pitfalls of chasing after goals at the expense of everything else. Instead, we'll be pursuing a life that is genuinely fulfilling and meaningful.

Now, ask yourself:
- What is my vision for my life? How do I want my life to look like?
- How does it align with my values?
- What do I want to achieve, and what do I want to avoid?

Remember that it's essential to strike a balance between your goals and the other aspects of your life, like relationships, enjoyment, etc. By doing so, you can ensure that your achievements don't come at the cost of your relationships and personal well-being.

It's important to have "go-for-goals".
But don't neglect to set your "no-go(als)".

Without them, the cost of reaching the goals may be too high. And you might realise it way too late. Having no red-lines in my life led me on a path which nearly ended in suicide.

That's why having a clear understanding of who you are and what is your purpose is essential for creating a Life Vision.

My tip:

Focus on your overall vision and ensure that it aligns with your values and purpose. Set not only goals to achieve, but also things to avoid.

By doing so, you can create a life that is truly fulfilling and meaningful. A life that brings happiness rather than leaving you feeling empty and alone.

So take some time to reflect on your vision for your life and make sure it reflects who you are and what truly matters to you.
