Get up and do something

I am back, baby... ;-)

Yes, after two weeks away I'm back in the UK, and it’s time to rethink some things.

Normally, I take two days each year to think about my life: my birthday in July and the end of the year. Around my birthday, I focus on what's inside—my purpose and the values that are important to me. It's when I consider how I want to present myself in the world.

The end-of-year reflection is more about the outside stuff—where to live, what people I want to be around, what I want to experience and the things I want to achieve.

But this year, things have been different. Finishing my book, other projects, and what I experienced during my holiday got me thinking ahead of time. I don’t want to wait till the end of the year to make decisions that could improve my life now.

One reason to start making plans now is because every day counts. If you have a dream or a goal, every day you don't take action is one less day to enjoy what you want. It's like if you want to be with someone, every day you don't talk to that person and don't say to them, "I love you. I want to be with you," means that you will have one less day together. When you don’t talk to someone you care about—you miss a day of connection. It applies to dreams too. Every day you wait to act on them is a day less you'll have to live them.

Making changes often involves thinking about what you have to put in and what you’ll get out of it. It’s not just about the physical effort but also how it affects you mentally and emotionally. I’ve realised that taking time to plan out these changes now means I won’t put them off any longer.

How does this work?
I find it helps to regularly make a list of what interests me and draws me in. It's less about serious decisions and more about what captures my attention and makes me curious. I look back on the year to see what kept me going, what I lost interest in, and what new things grabbed my attention.

First, I reflect on things from last year—what went well and what didn’t, and why.
Second, I look ahead. If something no longer interests me or if new interests have popped up, I'll consider those too.
After putting everything together, I'll make a list of what's most compelling for me, what I am most passionate about.

You've probably heard about passion. It's a mantra: "Find your passion."

Well, passion isn’t just about happiness; the origin of the word means that you are willing to suffer or work hard for something you truly want. For instance, if you're passionate about climbing Mount Everest, you will suffer on the way to the top. But you will do it because it's worth it to you. Passion is what gets you through the hard bits.

So, my tip for today is:

Don’t wait for a special date to make changes. Start now with small steps to explore what interests you.

Every day you delay is a day less to live what you want. If you start now, you learn what you need and can enjoy quicker. You don’t need to know all the steps. Starting allows you to figure it out as you go.

Delaying action can mean losing focus, especially if you wait for a particular date like New Year’s. Ideas that stick in your mind deserve some attention now. Try out small steps to see what reaching your goal involves. This way, you know both the good and bad before committing fully.

Have a good day, thank you for reading and see you next Tuesday.
