Are You Truly Valued? How to Know and What to Do

Hello ,

Did you notice that the same bottle of water can cost $0.20 at Costco, $0.50 at a supermarket, $2 in a pub, $3 at a hotel, and $5 at the airport?

It's the same bottle, yet its value changes based on where it is. So, if you feel undervalued, people often say "Go where you are valued." I don't agree. Where we are is not the main or only thing that determines our value.

Our value is determined by what we stand for AND if the place we are at values those things.

Too many people with overinflated egos use this as an excuse to demand more without deserving it, while others who lack confidence never realise they’re being undervalued.

So, how can we know our true value and—if needed—make a meaningful change in our life? That's what I am going to look into today.

  1. Self-Evaluation: Who Are You?

Before anything else, take a deep dive into understanding yourself. Who are you, really? What drives you and what are your passions? It’s not just about titles or roles but about your core identity. Gaining this understanding is the first step to knowing if you’re being valued correctly.

  2. Understanding Your Values: What Are Your Values?

Next, ask yourself, what are your values? Notice I didn't say "what is your value” but rather “what ARE your values?” These are the principles you live by and the things you cherish the most. Maybe it's honesty, loyalty, creativity, or kindness. Whatever they are, list these values out. They form the foundation of your true worth.

  3. Aligning with Your Values

Now that you know who you are and what your values are, it’s time to see if the environment you are in reflects those values. Do the people around you uphold honesty and integrity, or are they okay with cutting corners? Is kindness a core principle, or is it every person for themselves? If your surroundings do not resonate with your values, it might be time to think about standing up for what you value or—if that doesn't help—changing places.

When assessing your environment, think beyond personal treatment. Look at how your valued principles are held by those around you. If your place values honesty, loyalty, and diligence—just like you do—you will naturally feel valued. It's not only about seeking a better place; it's about finding a place that resonates with who you are, your deepest values.

    4. Building Your Value

Self-awareness and understanding your values are essential, but you also need to constantly add value. What skills or talents do you bring to the table? If you’re striving to be valued more, ensure you have something substantial to offer. Invest in your growth—personally and professionally. Learn new skills, embrace challenges, and consistently aim for improvement. The biggest flex of all is being the same inside and outside. When you stand for your principles, people notice. This makes you not just marketable but truly valuable in the eyes of those who value the same principles.

    5. Avoiding Ego Traps

Falling into the trap of ego is easy. Feeling undervalued can sting, and you might be tempted to inflate your self-worth beyond reality. Take a moment to objectively assess where you stand. Confidence is important, but having a clear and honest view of your strengths and areas for improvement will keep you grounded.

Today's Tip:

Your value isn’t just a figure that fluctuates with the market. It’s deeply connected to who you are and what you stand for.

Before deciding to change your place, take the time to understand yourself and your values. Uphold your values and stand for who you are. And only when that leads to conflicts and rejection, look for a new place. Make sure that any new place you consider respects and aligns with those values. In doing so, you’ll not only find a place where you're valued but also one where you can genuinely thrive.

That’s all for today. Thank you for reading, and see you next Tuesday.
